million in revenues; this
is expected to grow nearly
10 times to reach $605
million by 2010 and cross
$I billion by 2015.
Apart from the lure of
huge cost savings, the
Indian legal offshoring
growth is being driven
primarily by the availability
of law graduates in a
country where the legal
system is similar to those
in major English speaking
countries like the US
and UK. More recently,
however, pressure on law
firms to reduce costs
has led to the outsourcing
of paralegal tasks and
the emergence of what
is now known as Legal
Process Outsourcing (LPO)
as accepted practice.
The range of legal processes
that have been effectively
outsourced by large law
firms in the US and UK
include legal transcription,
database creation and
maintenance, scanning

Legal Outsourcing
jobs to India by 2015
India has huge potential
in legal outsourcing,
with the number of jobs
in the field increasing
to 79,000 by 2015, a study
by an American research
firm has said.
The study estimated that
jobs in the field which
was poised to increase
dramatically from about
$80 million annually to
approximately $4 billion
would grow to 29,000 in
2008, 35,000 by 2010,
and 79,000 by 2015. At
present the number of
jobs in legal outsourcing
in India stood less than
12,000, it said.
Outsourcing would reduce
costs for US customers
as the rates for Indian
legal workers were about
10 to 20 per cent of their
American counterparts.
It said more than 200,000
Indians graduate from
law schools each year,
five times more than in
the US.
"Indian outsourcing
offers the following economic
advantages: a significant
wage differential with
Indian firms report paying
legal researchers around
$12,000 per year. There
are also savings in perks,
overhead, and working
conditions," the
study said adding time
zone differences allowed
for overnight and 24X7
operations.

a bit of overhead required
in document preparation.
Regardless of practice
area, law firms must code,
prepare, and index a variety

to the medical profession,
the well-being of an individual
could be affected by the
documents.
Today litigation is an
important facet of business,

takes place in the civil

requires hard copy documentation.
The information is either
dictated or recorded in
the courtroom or at deposition
hearings, as well as in
law offices in less official
settings. It may include
testimony, pleadings,
interrogatories (questions
and answers), reviews
of administrative hearings
and the like. Generally,
the information is recorded
either onto tape or onto
digital voice processing
systems. It includes the
process of transferring
information from recorded
dictation to hard documentation.

to ensure the highest
levels of accuracy and
consistency with your
coded data.
Document Coding
or Indexing
The process of cataloging
or indexing documents
so as to be easily retrieved,
sorted, reviewed, or prioritized.
High quality coding protocols
are built on a framework
of effective design, standardized
conventions, highly trained
coders, appropriate technology
and multiple levels of
quality control.
Locating a key fact in
a matter of seconds from
volumes of documents requires
an expertly coded litigation
database. To guarantee
accuracy and expedite
database assembly, Litigation
Outsource can capture
date, file type and limited
issues at scan time for
an extensive data set
that contains all key
facts. Our comprehensive
coding service includes:
• Data Capture
• Determination
of Physical or Logical
Document Breaks
• Optical Character
Recognition
• Bibliographic
Coding
• In-Text Coding
Data Capture-
Ever increasing
case loads require efficiency
be maximized at every
level. At Litigation Outsource,
we can save valuable time
by capturing data during
the imaging process. Simultaneously,
this data can be objectively
coded for delivery into
a fielded database. Depending
on your instruction, we
then enhance the database
by performing additional
bibliographic and in-text
coding.
Determination of Physical
or Logical Document- Multi-page
documents residing in
electronic form can easily
become problematic if
not properly organized.
Litigation Outsource unitizes
these document types within
your document population
according to the search
parameters you specify.
Throughout the coding
process, Litigation Outsource
staff uses strict rules
to assign document boundaries
in order to perform logical
document unitization.
If a large number of batched
document types exists
such as a set of manuals,
we will set document boundaries
per your instruction for
the most efficient use
of these documents within
your database.
Optical Character Recognition-
In order to search the
text within imaged files,
it is necessary to convert
these files into readable
text. Litigation Outsource
uses Optical Character
Recognition (OCR) to convert
this imaged text into
computer readable ASCII
text. This important step
enables you to search
all of your documents
for key words or phrases,
giving you a more efficient
and powerful litigation
database. Our experienced
Litigation Outsource team
takes the steps necessary
during the imaging process
to obtain the best possible
capture of the original
document in order to later
conduct a successful OCR
conversion.
Bibliographic Coding-
Locating important facts
about a document’s
origin can be time consuming
and frustrating. Litigation
Outsource uses bibliographic
coding techniques to help
expedite your sort and
review process. We capture
the creation date, author,
recipients, document type,
document title, signature
and organization of origin.
Based on your needs, fields
can be added or deleted.
We can also customize
your database with codes
that apply specifically
to your case.
In-Text Coding- Finding
multiple references of
a name or organization
within your document population
can help you build a more
effective case. At Litigation
Outsource, we use in-text
coding to extrapolate
this data for rapid sourcing
of every reference. Names
of individuals and organizations
along with other key words
or phrases within the
body of each document
are coded based on your
instruction.
Many times data and names
are found in various formats
(i.e. John Smith, Mr.
Smith or John A. Smith)
within the same document
population. At your discretion,
Litigation Outsource uses
data and name normalization
procedures to uniformly
assign the same reference
throughout the database.
This process guarantees
optimal database search
capabilities with no reference
overlooked.
Subjective Coding–
Coding documents based
on subjective interpretation,
rather than the verbatim
capture of words or terms.
The subjects may be represented
in shorthand “code”
form to facilitate searching,
sorting and reporting.
Litigation Outsource
has created databases
for a variety of clients
and projects.
• Pharmaceutical
Litigation
• Patent Litigation
• Insurance Litigation
• Labor/Employment
Litigation
• Criminal Investigations
• Environmental
Litigation
• Construction Litigation

our summaries to your
specific requirements.
Our consultants are trained
to distill complex testimony
into manageable material
without compromising the
tone of the deposition.
Litigation Outsource offers
deposition summaries in
any of three standard
formats. Our chart and
page-by-page formats provide
a continuous distillation
of the transcript with
intuitive topic headings
corresponding to each
successive page range.
The topical format, in
which testimony is organized
into topical sections,
indicates where any information
pertaining to each main
subject (or the subjects
you specify) can be found.
COURT REPORTING
Compressed and
Indexed Transcripts
- A very popular court
reporting service is the
compressed and indexed
transcript format. This
service provides the transcript
with several pages of
deposition testimony on
a single page, thereby
reducing the size of transcripts
clients need to store,
handle, and carry around.
An index of deposition
and trial testimony is
one that is generating
a great deal of interest
from trial attorneys.
This time-saving service
provides an index of all
of the meaningful words
contained within a transcript
as a quick-and-ready reference
to key testimony.

ELECTRONIC EVIDENCE
DISCOVERY
Today attorneys find themselves
deluged with new volumes
of discoverable information,
all electronically created
and stored. Beyond paper
files pertinent to a case,
now e-mail messages, computer
files, spreadsheets, word
processing documents and
all attachments must be
considered when preparing
for a case. At times multiple
hard drives must be retrieved
and searched.
The majority of business
information is stored
as electronic document
data. This electronic
data is a critical source
of evidence in litigation.
Due to the volume of electronic
information, the courts
have recognized how critical
electronic discovery is
to successfully navigating
through a case. From collecting
and reviewing data through
electronic document production,
effective management of
your electronic information
is critical to any Firm’s
success moving forward.
Your goal is to win. Our
goal is to help you to
do just that.
The process of converting
electronic documents (application
files) and e-mail into
a standard graphical file
format (PDF or TIFF),
for easy viewing or printing
to paper, and extracting
all of the text for full-text
searching. The images
and text data can then
be imported into any of
the standard litigation
support software packages
or repositories, for use
in discovery.
How does it work?
• Client provides
Litigation Outsource with
the electronic files.
• Litigation Outsource
extracts all text from
the application files
and
e-mail, along with the
‘meta-data’
of each file, and creates
a database load file.
Application Files:
All files that are created
by using a software program.
These files contain the
actual information formatted
for that specific program.
Examples include Excel®
spreadsheets, Word®
or WordPerfect® documents,
and Adobe® PDF files.
Meta-data:
The information associated
with an application file’s
data elements or attributes.
Typically, this includes
file name, creation date,
user name, file location,
etc.
Text Extraction:
The process of removing
all text from non-graphical
application files or e-mail,
for use in a full-text
search database. E-mail
text can be further segregated
into fields, such as author,
recipient, date, subject,
etc.
E-mail:
Software programs such
as Outlook®, Outlook
Express®, Lotus Notes®,
cc:mail® and eudora®,
store all e-mail in large
‘application files’.
The e-mail can be converted
to an image (PDF or TIFF
format) or printed to
paper. All of the text
can be extracted and imported
into a database with fields,
such as author, recipient,
cc, date, subject, body
of e-mail, etc. All attachments
are also converted and
linked to the original
e-mail.
• Identification
of duplicates and other
filtering processes can
eliminate unwanted files.
• E-mail, application
files and graphic files
are converted into a single,
easy to use image format,
and branded with a production
number or a confidential
designation.
• The image files
and database load file
can be easily imported
into any major litigation
support software programs,
such as Concordance®
and Summation®. The
images can be printed
with slip-sheets between
documents, with custom
footer information, such
as a production number
or a confidential designation.
• The legal team
can now review and/or
produce the documents.
Effective capture of meta
data, cataloguing and
indexing of electronic
documents (including emails),
together with creation
of numbered images, for
importation into your
litigation support system.
Litigation Outsource has
developed strict methodology
for the automatic capture
of meta data. We recognize
that every project is
different, and that different
documents allow different
meta data to be captured
automatically.
Upon receipt of the electronic
documents, Litigation
Outsource will provide
you with a comprehensive
overview of the types
of documents that are
to be processed and liaise
closely with you to ensure
that the meta data that
you receive is in accordance
with your requirements.
Litigation Outsource
can extract metadata from
common file types including:
• Email files (MS
Outlook, Lotus Notes,
Groupwize)
• Microsoft files
(Word, Powerpoint, Visio,
Project, Excel)
• WordPerfect
• Text files such
as Rich Text Format and
plain text
• HTML
• Image files such
as GIF, TIFF, BMP, PDF,
and JPEG
• Compressed files
such as WinZip files can
be extracted and these
files can also be processed
Data output can be supplied
in any format, including
an MS Access multi-table
format, and a "flat
file" format.
In any discovery, the
first step is to identify
the documents that need
to be collected in order
to determine whether they
are relevant to the issues
at trial. Litigation Outsource
can assist with the forensic
retrieval and analysis
of electronic data, including
password cracking.
